Council tax guidance

About your council tax including how we work out your bill, what we spend it on, and discounts you may be able to apply for.

You must register for council tax if you are aged 18 or over and live or own property in Islington. We send you a bill every year (from April of the current year to March of next year) unless you do not have to pay council tax.

The money you pay goes towards services that we provide. These include recycling and rubbish collections, mending and maintaining streets and green spaces, and health and wellbeing programmes for residents.

Register for council tax and see your bill

  1. Sign up for My Islington or log in.
  2. Choose 'manage your account' under 'My council tax'.
  3. Click 'add your account' then 'next' and fill in the form.

Once you have created a My Islington login and added your council tax account to My Islington, you can see your bill online at any time.

Your bill is from 5 April this year to 4 April next year (this is called the 'tax year' or 'financial year'). Usually, your bill is split over 10 monthly payments.

If you set up a direct debit, your bill will be split over 12 monthly payments that come out of your account on the date you choose.
