Housing repair claim scam

Find out more about a housing repair claim scam where people target council residents by offering to help you claim money for repairs that you need.

Claim farming

Council tenants have told us that they’re being approached by companies that encourage them to make legal claims for things that need repairing in their homes. This is known as “claim farming”.

A claim farmer encourages residents to make a claim, using their company, and then sells your personal details on to legal firms.

What to look out for

These companies are not always what they seem. They will often:

  • say they are from Islington Council or working on behalf of the council – this is not true
  • advertise on social media, put leaflets through your letterbox or knock on your door, or may even call you – sometimes from unknown numbers or local lines
  • say they are “no-win, no fee” services when there are really hidden costs
  • only give you a very small amount of compensation money if your claim is successful.

Some people have been left in debt after signing a contract to work with these companies.

How to avoid scams and get your repair problems fixed
